Feb 7 Trail Conditions

07 Feb 2014 12:52 PM | Anonymous
Trail conditions haven't changed much since my post on Monday, because we haven't had a lot of new snow - somewhat over 5 cm.  The trails continue to be in prime mid-winter condition.  The Kolapore parking lot was plowed recently, and is in good shape.  (This wasn't the case earlier this week.  Plowing is done as a public service by Grey County, and they undoubtedly had other plowing priorities.)
Get out and ski - it will be cool this weekend, but the skiing should be great.

Where is a good spot to check out the trail for hiking this weekend? Never been to it before. Thank you.

      Hi Eva,

In the winter the Kolapore trails are devoted solely to cross country skiing. Other activities such as snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and hiking are not permitted.

Here is the notice on the main page of the Kolapore website: In winter, the Kolapore Trails are managed for cross country skiing. Snowshoeing, walking and motorized vehicles are not permitted. Please leave your dog at home.

There are two main reasons for this: firstly, to keep the ski tracks in prime shape (avoiding hiking and snowshoeing footprints, which ruin the set track); and secondly, it would be very difficult to hike in the over 60cm of snow in the forest currently!

In summer the trails are open for hiking and mountain biking though, I encourage you to visit then.

I would love to go mountain biking on them. Where is a good place to park and what trail do you recommend someone who hasn't been on those trails checks out first. I am a cross country rider. Thanks!
