The milder temperatures and sun today melted a significant part of the snow.  We will need a considerable amount of snow before the trails will be skiable again.  Kolapore Trail Guide

We skied across the north side of County Forest and west on to Southern Crossing this morning, and had a pleasant time.  Of course we were using rock skis.  The snow gauge is at 16 cm of loose snow, so there are only a few cm under your ski after the first pass.  We encountered quite a few damp areas - we set new tracks in a number of locations as we returned, to avoid the yellow or wet tracks.  We used our scraper a few times to remove ice.  Given the weather forecast, I'm not planning to ski tomorrow, and in fact it may be quite a while before there are decent conditions again.  Kolapore Trail Guide

Kolapore had another 10 cm of snow overnight.  The settled snow depth is about 20 cm.  In theory you could ski, but because there is no base your skis would likely hit lots of rocks.  PM update:  I just spoke to a skier who went in at the Kolapore entrance, and they were icing badly because of moisture under the snow, and scraping on rocks. As of 10 AM, Kolapore has received 11 cm of snow.  I will provide updates, although (given the lack of any base and ground that isn't fully frozen) it is unlikely that conditions will permit decent skiing in the short term.  Let's hope for a cold, snowy winter, to help us celebrate the Kolapore Trails 50th Anniversary.  Kolapore Trail Guide

Good morning everyone, with the rain today and expected for the next few days, we would urge cyclist to please stay off the trails until they dry up and for hikers to exercise caution.

With a promising weather forecast for the latter half of the week hopefully we can be back out biking by the weekend!

Although this site mainly deals with ski conditions, I thought I would give a quick spring update.  There are parts of the Kolapore trail system that are OK for riding and walking at the moment, and there are parts that are still quite wet and soft, especially after the recent rain.  In general, the SE portion of the trail system is in good shape (east of the 10th Line, south of Paradise Highway).   Kolapore Church should be good, but Paradise Highway has some very wet sections.  With the exception of the Mount Dhaulagiri loop and the Marc's Folly area, everything west of the 10th Line should be avoided.   Early spring flowers are coming along nicely, but the white trilliums are still in tight bud.

Although there are still patches of snow, ski season has ended.  We are now into spring thaw.  We would prefer that people stay off the trails for several weeks while they dry out a bit.  Trail use at this time has the maximum negative impact.  This is particularly true for the parts of our trail system that are in lower, moister areas.  They can quickly get churned into a sea of mud.  Some trails dry out faster than others, e.g., Kolapore Church and parts of County Forest.  However, if you want to support "sustainable trails", it would be best to defer use for a while.

It is probably possible to ski at the east end of the County Forest, although the snow is disappearing fast.  Skiers were in there on Saturday and said it was passable.  The Saturday report from the Kolapore entrance was that it was not skiable - rocks and mud.  Skiing will end in a day or two, even for the hard core.  Kolapore Trail Guide

Yesterday and overnight Kolapore received about 3 cm of snow.  This is on top of an icy crust.  It would be theoretically possible to ski at Kolapore, but I would strongly recommend avoiding hills.  I'm planning to ski at Scenic Caves today, where the skiing will be much safer.  Kolapore Trail Guide

I'm sure that no one would be crazy enough to try to go skiing today.  I'll just note that Kolapore had quite a bit of freezing rain, and the high winds brought a lot of branches down.  There is still enough snow to ski in the bush once the weather calms down, but conditions are likely to be  poor.  Kolapore Trail Guide
