Our Strategic Plan: Protecting Kolapore’s Trails and Wilderness
The Kolapore Wilderness Trails Association Strategic Plan 2026–2030
provides a roadmap for the future of our trails, our organisation, and the wider
Kolapore community.
Our mission is to develop and maintain a sustainable, year-round, multi-use
wilderness trail network in the Kolapore Uplands. Our vision balances
human-powered recreation with protection of the area’s natural environment,
while supporting a welcoming trail community and a strong, responsive
organisation.
Our Strategic Priorities
Over the next five years, the Association will focus on:

Sustainable trail stewardship: Establishing trail management
standards, undertaking regular trail assessments, and planning improvements
that preserve the character of the trail network while responding to changing
climate and use patterns.

Conservation and environmental leadership: Protecting,
interpreting, and celebrating the natural and human heritage of the Kolapore
Uplands while promoting responsible trail use and environmental stewardship.

Community and participation: Building an engaged and diverse
trail community through volunteer stewardship, educational activities,
community events, membership programmes, and outreach.

Communication and partnerships: Strengthening communication
with trail users, landowners, community partners, and other stakeholders while
providing clear ways to share feedback and report trail concerns.

A strong and sustainable organisation: Renewing governance,
supporting volunteers, managing organisational knowledge and risk, and
building the financial capacity needed to maintain the trails and undertake
future initiatives.

Health and well-being: Championing the health and social
benefits of backcountry skiing, cycling, hiking, and other human-powered
activities while maintaining free trail access.
The plan reflects our commitment to keeping Kolapore a special place for
outdoor recreation, conservation, learning, and community connection. Its
success will depend on the continued involvement of members, volunteers, trail
users, donors, landowners, and community partners.
