Kolapore received 15+ cm of snow over the past 24 hours.  (It's hard to tell exactly how much, because there was a lot of drifting.)   There should be some good skiing, if you don't mind breaking trail.  In the short term (i.e. Monday morning) driving and parking may be a bit challenging.  The Kolapore parking lot isn't likely to be plowed until later today.

Over the past 36 hours Kolapore has received 10+ cm of new snow.  We didn't get much new snow overnight, but we also didn't get the freezing drizzle that was threatened.  Yesterday I skied parts of County Forest, Kingsway and John's Portage, and the skiing was pleasant.  Trails that were "skied in" before Tuesday's freezing rain storm ski relatively well, although my poles (even with larger baskets) kept breaking through the crust.  Off track, skis are likely to break through the crust.  (The crust is about 1 cm thick.)  The Kolapore parking lot was plowed mid-day Friday.

For those who are interested, the snow gauge is at 48 cm, which is the highest it's been at any point this winter.  This means we didn't lose much base in the freezing rain/rain storm this week.

Yesterday Kolapore received a heavy layer of freezing rain in the afternoon, followed by rain.  There is an icy crust - about 1 cm thick! - everywhere.  As of 10 AM we had received a cm or two of new snow.  Ski conditions will be very poor until we get a substantial amount of new snow.

    ...that's all I can say.

Kolapore received about 20 cm of snow over Wednesday - Thursday, and it has been flurrying periodically today.  The new snow has substantially improved trail conditions.  The Kolapore parking lot was plowed late Thursday afternoon.  Among other trails, I skied Trail to the Summit this morning, and the south half of it has some wet holes that you need to tip toe around.  I think the same will be true on Southern Crossing west of the 10th line, Quiet Pastures and a  section of Paradise Highway just north of intersection 54.  Be sure to take a scraper in case your skis ice up.

Kolapore received about 20 cm of snow over Wednesday - Thursday.  This substantially improved trail conditions.  The snow gauge is up to 44 cm - the highest it's been this winter.  The Kolapore parking lot is in great shape (plowed late Thursday afternoon.)  I would still be cautious on the wet trails (Southern Crossing west of the 10th line, Quiet Pastures and south half of Trail to the Summit) - they may need a few more days of cold weather before they are enjoyably skiable.  There are also wet or rocky areas on other trails that require caution.

Kolapore has not received any significant new snow since the 10 cm that came Saturday night.  We did not receive the dump of snow that hit some local areas last night.  The Saturday night snow significantly improved trail conditions.  I would still recommend rock skis on the rockier trails.  There are some wet areas on the trails from recent thaws, and as a result I would continue to recommend avoiding Southern Crossing west of the 10th line, Quiet Pastures and the south half of Trail to the Summit until we get colder weather.

7:30 AM Report:  Kolapore has received about 10 cm of snow in the past 24 hours - this will significantly improve conditions.  I would still recommend rock skis on the rockier trails.  There will be some wet areas on the trails from recent thaws, and as a result I would continue to recommend avoiding Southern Crossing west of the 10th line, Quiet Pastures and the south half of Trail to the Summit until we get some colder weather.

Yesterday I skied the County Forest, Kingsway and part of Wild Mouse. Overnight we've had about 2 cm of snow.  Based on this, here are my observations:

    • it is possible to do some pleasant skiing if you are selective about where you ski

    • with the possible exception of the County Forest, rock skis are strongly recommended. Some areas on the trail (e.g., south facing slopes) were bare a few days ago, and now they have about 10 cm of new snow. After a few skiers go through the track will be down to the ground. I think some of rocky trails like Paradise Highway will be in poor condition until we get a real dump of snow.

    • There are some very wet areas on the trails. Based on the wet areas in the County Forest (e.g., a lake on the trail west of intersection 4), I would strongly recommend avoiding Southern Crossing west of the 10th line, Quiet Pastures and the south half of Trail to the Summit.

The snow has refrozen, and the trails are now rock hard.  There are likely to be rocks showing through in some areas.  Skiing at the moment would be dangerous - no control on hills and there are frozen ruts from old ski tracks.  I strongly recommend staying off the trails until we get a decent amount of new snow (10 cm?)    The forecast for later in the week and the weekend is promising.
